Unknown gunmen early hours of Saturday attacked the residence of Imo governor, Mr Hope Uzodinma in his hometown, Omuma, Oru East Local Government Area of the state.
Ikengaonline reports that two security aides in the residence were reportedly killed while a part of the building and some vehicles were burnt by the hoodlums.
There was said to have been heavy gunfire during the attack.
The incident is coming few days after unknown gunmen attacked the police headquarters and the correctional centre in Owerri, Imo State, setting 38 vehicles ablaze and freeing 1,844 inmates.
Police stations have also come under attack in the region, with many officers killed.
Meanwhile, Imo State government has reacted to the attack on the governor’s residence, describing it as politically motivated.
The Commissioner for information and Strategy, Mr Declan Emelumba, said that security operatives successfully repelled the hoodlums who invaded the governor’s residence at about 9am.
Emelumba, however, said that there were few casualties in the cross fire that ensued, adding that the state government had directed security agencies to investigate the incident and arrest those behind it.
“A group of hoodlums numbering about 15 and driving in a motorcade of three vehicles accompanied by a tipper loaded with used tyres stormed the country home of the governor and attempted to burn down the house.
“However, vigilance security operatives attached to the governor’s house successfully repelled the attack and consequently minimised the damage they had planned to unleash,” he said..
“Preliminary investigation suggests that the foiled attack may have been politically sponsored,” Emelumba said.
Recall that South-East governors recently announced a joint security outfit, codenamed ‘Ebube Agu’ to battle rising insecurity.
