People of Omor community in Ayamelum Local Government Area, Anambra State, have asked the State House of Assembly Speaker, Honourable Uche Okafor, to perish his third term ambition in the interest of peace and fairness in the area.
The community also threatened that if the Speaker refused to shelve his third term agenda, respects and abides by the zoning arrangement instituted earlier by stakeholders from Ayamelum State Constituency for various political offices, where the Speaker represents, it could result to political violence during the election.
This development followed the endorsement of the Speaker by some people of Ayamelum LGA including Omambala Women Traders Association, Ayamelum Chapter for the Speaker’s third term re-election bid.
Addressing journalists in Awka, Friday on behalf of Omor community, Barrister Mike Ikegbunam, argued that Omor community should be allowed to produce the next state constituency member in line with the existing zoning arrangement.
He said it was a breach of agreement for the incumbent Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon Uche Okafor, from Ifite Ogwari to present himself for a third term in the constituency.
The legal luminary said they had been told a lot of stories in the past which they fell for but this time, they were fully prepared for the Speaker, and that they would do everything humanly possible to ensure that the Speaker did not return to the House of Assembly in 2023.
Demanding for equity as the build up for 2023 election intensifies, he said it was the turn of Omor community to produce the next lawmaker in the spirit of fairness and equity, and to sustain the already existing peace in the area.
“When Hon. Uche Okafor was allowed to contest for a second term, we allowed him because he said the former Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, wanted to make him the Speaker of the House of Assembly. But now, we can’t allow him to go for a third term as it negates our zoning formular. Somebody from Omor should go this time around,” Ikegbunam argued.
He then drew the attention of various stakeholders to the impending breach of agreement by some political actors to actualize their selfish ambition which could be detrimental to the peace being enjoyed in the constituency.
