The former governor of the old Abia State and the immediate past minister of science and technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, has criticized the unjust treatment of the South-East in the politics of the country.
Onu a presidential aspirant, made his position known while addressing delegates and members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Tuesday night at the presidential convention of the party holding at Eagle Square, Abuja.
The former minister reminded members of the party and the president, Muhammadu Buhari, the role he played in the birthing of APC as a political party to the point that he was the one that provided the money for the registration of the party.
Onu, however, was unhappy with the way the party has handled the issues of justice, unity and peace, which he said were intertwined and self-reinforcing. “When you have justice, it will bring unity, and when you have unity, there will be peace,” he said.
But the aspirant complained about the way APC has treated the issue of zoning within the party. He said after 8 years of President Buhari, it was proper for the presidency to move South. But he said it was unfair for APC to be looking towards the South-West after the 8 years of former President Obasanjo and 8 years of Professor Yemi Osinbajo from the South-West. According to him justice, equity and fairness demands that the next president of Nigeria should come from the South-East.
“In a just society, the next president of Nigeria should come from the South-East. I am not saying this because I am from the South-East, I am saying so because it is the truth. But where is the justice?”
Onu further went down history lane and reminded his party members how he stepped down when he already had the presidential ticket of one the major parties in 1999 but had to step down so that two Yorubas could emerge in the two political parties to solve a national problem in the South-West at the time.
