Police in Anambra say they have commenced investigation to unravel the truth behind allegation of attempted extortion of a businessman by an Investigating Police Officer (IPO) of the State Command.
A businessman had narrated on his Twitter account how an IPO of the Anambra State Police Command demanded the sum of five N500, 000 before a case of theft of goods in his shop could be investigated.
The businessman, who gave his name as Joshua Nwaneli, on his Twitter handle @Jbstar, narrated that he lodged a complaint of theft of goods worth millions of naira in his shop at a police division in Anambra State Police Command, but was surprised that the IPO demanded for the sum of N500,000 before he could start investigating the matter.
In a series of tweets on Friday, he wrote: “We recently got robbed of over millions of naira in our shop here in Awka. The policeman/IPO in charge of the case was demanding N500,000 before he would start investigation.
“To update this, the Nigerian Police were demanding our source of income. In conclusion, the said boy was released. Nigeria has failed us.”
His narratives however got the attention of the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who disclosed that he had asked the Anambra State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, to look into the allegation with a view to bringing the officer to justice.
Following the directive of the Force PRO, DSP Ikenga, in a brief conversation made available to Ikengaonline, sent his phone number across to Mr. Nwaneli as well and demanded for further information on the matter. Nwaneli responded that he would send the message over to his lawyer but was yet to do so as at the time of filing this report.
DSP Ikenga, however, assured that the Anambra State command will follow the matter to a logical conclusion.
