The South-East has only made a minor improvement in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise according to the Weekly Update from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Figures released by INEC as at 7am on Monday June 6, 2022, indicate that the South-East with a total of 683,066 new registration is still behind all the other zones in the registration table.
The new figure represents 24.02% increase of the figure from the previous week, which was 550,771.
The breakdown of the latest figures according to states in the South-East puts Ebonyi State with 274,640 above the rest closely followed by Anambra that has registered 159,937 voters, and Abia with 108,127 newly registered voters. Others are Enugu, 72,237; and Imo with the lowest at 68,127.
However, there are allegations that intending voters across the South-East keen to register are being frustrated by INEC officials who either do not show up in their offices in time or overwhelmed because of inadequate machines for registration.
Ikengaonline reports that the emergence of Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has roused a great movement of young people now eager to participate in the ongoing continuous voter registration across the country, especially in the South-East. But the INEC figures do not seem to support this movement.
