The Enugu State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Sam Ujogu, says efforts are being made to enhance the monthly state allowance paid to corps members serving in the state.
Ujogu disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing newsmen after the swearing-in of the 2022 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Corps Members in Enugu.
Ikengaonline reports that corps members posted to urban centres of the state are paid monthly allowance of N1000 by the state government.
However, their counterparts posted to rural areas are paid monthly allowance of N4000 by the state government.
The NYSC state coordinator said that the welfare of corps members posted to the state was top priority.
“The management of the scheme in the state is looking into the welfare of corps members in Enugu State. We are liaising with the state government to ensure that they do the needful,” he said.
On the 2022 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Orientation Course, Ujogu said that 1, 460 corps members, comprising 634 males and 826 females were in camp.
“We are excited that the orientation programme is moving on smoothly and the corps members have really adjusted to the programme.
“We will continue to sensitise them to strictly abide by the rules and regulations governing the orientation course and be disciplined so that they can get the best,” he said.
Ujogu, who also read a prepared speech by the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. M. K. Fadah, urged the corps members to make the best use of the national service.
“I encourage you to avail yourselves of the opportunities for self-employment offered through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Programme.
“You must continue to distance yourselves from cultism, drug abuse and other social vices. Avoid using the social media for spreading fake news, fueling hatred and other negative purposes,” Ujogu said.
Ikengaonline further reports that the highlights of the event were the administration of the Oath of Allegiance on the corps members by Justice A. O. Onovo of the state high court and inauguration of the COVID-19 Vanguard, Corps Camp Directors and Platoon Leaders.
