The Ebonyi State Chairman, Gender Based Violence Taskforce Team, Barr. Faithvin Nwanchor on Tuesday insisted that the team will ensure justice for the 12 year old victim allegedly defiled by a lawyer in the state.
Nwanchor, a Lawyer who spoke in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital said that investigation into the matter has commenced and the taskforce will follow the matter to a logical conclusion.
She noted that the Gender desk office of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has already taken the victim to hospital for medical examination and treatment adding that the outcome of the medical examination would unravel the truth behind the matter.
She stated that the suspect who is a legal practitioner in his early 40s would be charged to court once the medical report is concluded.
“We got information that a 12 year old girl was raped and she was taken to hospital by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC where she is receiving treatment.
“I want to assure you that the Gender Based Violence Taskforce Team in Ebonyi State is following the matter closely and once they are done with the medical investigation, we will ensure that the accused person is charged to court”.
“We must ensure that Justice prevails on this Matter, the rape of this 12 years old, is a rape against the state. All hands must be on deck including the security agencies to ensure that justice is achieved in the court.”
“We gathered from Civil Defence office that they culprit is a lawyer who should be in his 40s.They woman in charge of gender in Civil Defence had commenced investigation into the matter.
“Medical test has been conducted and we are waiting for the result.”
She however advised parents to monitor the activities of their children to avoid further occurrence of such incidents adding that parents should always never to bath such victims pending when medical examinations are concluded.
“It is better to take the victim to hospital for medical examination without bathing in order to have a credible evidence to prove the rape the case.”
Similarly, the Ebonyi State Chairman of Human Right Defenders, Comrade Samson Oko Nweke, has also called for speedy investigation and prosecution of the suspect.
“We must stand up to our responsibility, enough of sweeping rape cases under the carpet. We call on relevant authorities to ensure proper investigation and speedy trial of the suspect.”
