No fewer than 200 youths and women in Ikwuano-Umuahia Federal Constituency of Abia State, have commenced training on fish production and marketing.
The five-day training facilitated by Hon. Sam Onuigbo representing the constituency began Thursday at the Kolping Society Umuahia.
Hon. Onuigbo said the gesture was aimed at reducing poverty among youths and women in the constituency.
He further noted that the training done in collaboration with the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, NICO, focused on making the constituency a major fishery hub in the state.
The lawmaker who was represented by his Liaison Officer, Mr Abraham Osondu, said the programme was a continuation of his commitment towards empowering his constituents.
“We are here to transfer skills to unemployed youths and unskilled women in this constituency, to sustain their livelihood and make income for themselves,” he said.
The House of Representatives Chairman on Climate Change said that the participants at the end of the training would receive starter pack – fishes and bags of feeds with cash to begin their own farms.
Participants expressed delight and gratitude to the lawmaker for facilitating such programme and promised to make best use of the knowledge acquired.
One of the participants, Mrs Adaku Patrick, told Ikengaonline that the training had aroused her interest in fish production, promising to get to work as soon as she got empowered.
