The family of a 17 years old girl, Nwuka Nwafor beaten to death in Ebonyi State has called for justice.
Ms Mwafor was allegedly beaten to death by a security guard working at the site of the Ebonyi International Airport, Onueke, Ebonyi State, Chukwuma Anyigor popularly known as “Ite Igwe.”
The victim was until her death an SS 1 student of Izo High School in Ezza North Local Government Area.
She was said to be engaging in menial jobs at the construction site during the weekends and holidays, to make ends meet.
A worker at the site said on the day she was allegedly killed, Anyigor instructed the deceased to evacuate some corn husks which were heaped at a particular section of the place.
But the young girl who had not eaten any corn before the incident let alone dropping its husks at the place refused to comply with the directive.
Her refusal infuriated Anyigor and he picked an object suspected to be a piece of plumbing pipe and hit her severally on the head.
“On the sorrowful day, Miss Nwuka and one of her friends were moving from one section of the airport to another in search of work until when they encountered Mr. Anyigor who particularly directed the deceased to pack the waste which was dumped by someone else.
“But the girl who could not figure out the reason behind such instruction refused to obey the command and Mr. Anyigor who could not control his anger started to beat the girl until she fainted.”
The deceased’s elder brother, Sunday Nwafor, said that Nwuka was rushed to the General Hospital, Onueke, and later to the Alex Ekwueme University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where she was confirmed dead by medical doctors.
Corroborating the incident, another of Nwuka’s siblings, Ekene Nwafor, on behalf of the family, appealed to the authorities for justice for his innocent sister
He said:“It actually happened on July 29. My sister did not commit any offence unless it has become an offence to fend for oneself. So, Nwuka died struggling to survive and she deserves justice. As a family, we demand for justice.”
Though the police could not confirm the incident, it was however gathered that the accused was instantly apprehended by security personnel at the site and later handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department at the State Police Command headquarters, Abakaliki.
However, over a month after the incident the family is still in the dark on the status of the matter.
Police spokesperson, Chris Anyanwu, said he was not aware of the incident.
He however promised to contact the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area and get back to this reporter later with his findings.
He was yet to do so at the time of this report.
