Abia State Police Command says it has commenced investigations into the killing of a police escort attached to the member representing Isiala Ngwa South state constituency, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, by his colleague.
The victim, Inspector Samuel Ugwor, was reportedly shot dead in Umuahia by his colleague simply identified as Benedict, following a hot argument that ensued between the duo.
According to reports, attempts by other police personnel in the lawmaker’s escort to disarm the killer-cop proved abortive as he went berserk and threatened to waste anyone who came near him.
He was said to have escaped to unknown destination with his AK-47 riffle, but later surrendered himself to the State Criminal Investigative Department, SCIID Umuahia, where he is currently detained.
Confirming the incident later to Ikengaonline, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in charge of Abia State, Geoffrey Ogbonna, said investigations had been launched to unravel what led to the incident.
Ogbonna who told Ikengaonline that the incident occurred on Saturday, described it as “unfortunate and discreditable.”
The PPRO said: “The policemen are from SPU base 15 Anambra State but attached to Hon. Ginger Onwusibe.
“The erring policeman is in custody while the deceased is in the morgue. The case is under investigation by State CID Umuahia.”
