Ben Ezechime, Enugu
Bandits suspected to be herdsmen in the early hours on Thursday, mounted a road block along Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road shooting sporadically at motorists, causing long queues of vehicles on either side of the road.
A motorist, who refused to be named sent warning to people traveling or about to travel through the road to be cautious.
“The spot of the incident is around a police checkpoint by Ekwuegbe axis in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area.
“However, armed operatives of the Nigerian Army and Police were seen moving on motorcycles towards the scene of the attack.
“So, for now we don’t know what the situation is like as there has been no feedback,” he said.
Another motorist who spoke to Ikengaonline lamented that their journey has been terminated.
“We have been here since about 7am. This road has become something else. They operate from Ekwuege forest.
“There is no vehicle moving to and fro since morning; though, there have been movements of police and soldiers towards the scene, but we don’t know the extent they have gone,” he said.
Ikengaonline recalls that similar incident occurred on the same road last Sunday with the suspected herdsmen kidnapping some passengers said to be students of University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
The students were said to be returning to school after the suspended eight months ASUU strike.
Though the Police command in Enugu said they were trailing the kidnappers, but nothing concrete had concrete had come out of it.
Unconfirmed report said that the kidnappers have demanded for N300,000 before releasing the victims.
