Nonsochukwu Uwa, Owerri
Thugs have allegedly stopped the inauguration of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential campaign council in Imo state, on Sunday.
Some party leaders who spoke to newsmen at the party Secretariat in Owerri made the allegation and allegedly linked it to the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
The party leaders said that trouble started when the state Secretary of PDP, Ray Emeana, who was reading out the list of the campaign council did not mention Samuel Anyanwu, as the leader of the campaign council, and the thugs got angry and disrupted the process.
The situation they said led to the Director General of Anyanwu’s campaign organisation, the Divine Mandate, Ngozi Ogbu, to stage a walkout from the secretariat.
Reacting, the Publicity Secretary of the Imo State chapter of the PDP, Collins Opuruzor, who confirmed the tensed situation, however, said he was indisposed to comment on the matter.
“I am indisposed right now to speak to the press. We are in the middle of a process. Once we’re done, we shall let the public know the outcome,” he said.
Responding, the National Secretary of PDP, through his Special Adviser on Media, Ikenna Onuoha, denied all the allegations.
“The allegation is false and baseless. There is nothing like that. If the party secretariat was invaded as alleged it could have been done by a section of individuals not linked to Anyanwu.
“We don’t have thugs and all the persons loyal to Senator Anyanwu are responsible. From the information I received, it seems that there was a hitch somewhere that hampered the inauguration because leaders of the party boycotted whatever was meant to happen today. So, if the leaders of the party boycotted so who are you going to inaugurate?”
