The Torch of Unity for the forthcoming 2022, 21st National Sports Festival (NSF), has arrived Enugu State Government House en route Asaba, capital of Delta State.
The National Sports Festival is billed to hold in Asaba from November 28 to December 10.
Receiving the torch at the Government House, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi pledged total support to the state athletes to win laurels for the state.
Ugwuanyi, who was represented by Steve Orurua, Special Assistant on Information, said he knows the importance of sports, especially the torch of unity and that for many years, sports has been pivotal in keeping the country united.
According to him, sports has kept the youths away from social vices and its importance cannot be overemphasized.
“We wish to welcome you to Enugu and to pledge our government support to the success of NSF.
“At the 20th edition, we won three gold medals, three silver medals, and a bronze medal and that shows that the athletes are not left behind by the government.
“On this note, I want to assure you that Enugu State will continue to partner with the Federal Government and all sports loving athletes for successful outings,” he said.
Speaking, the Director, Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports, Mrs Amaka Ashiofu thanked the government for their promise and for receiving the torch of unity.
“As a Director of Sports in the Ministry, I urge the athletes to try not to relent,” she said.
The Enugu Zonal Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports, Mrs Margaret Eze, said the torch of unity shows that all is set for the Festival.
“Our presence here today, signaled to Enugu people that the torch of unity has arrived their state and I hope the athletes are ready for the competition.
“We want the State Government to accompany the athletes to the 2022 NSF in Delta, to compete with their counterparts from other states,” Eze said.
