The Imo State Police Command has said hoodlums suspected to be armed group of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Sunday attacked with explosives the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Oru West Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Michael Abattam, confirmed the attack to newsmen in Owerri.

He said the hoodlums attacked the INEC office by throwing an explosive over the fence and it destroyed the conference hall of the INEC building, damaging other facilities.

This is coming days after the Orlu office of the INEC was attacked last Friday by hoodlums.

According to Police, “On 04/12/ 2022 at about 0400 hours, gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN) came in their numbers to the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission office in Oru West Local Government Area of Imo State, threw Improvised Explosive Devices( IEDs) into the office from outside the fence, shooting sporadically but were repelled by the gallantry displayed by the police operatives on duty.

“The police operatives who engaged the hoodlums professionally, inflicted various degrees of injuries on them. Having suffered a huge defeat, the hoodlums retreated, escaping in their vehicle and were give a hot chase by the operatives.”

“However, the explosives fell on the Conference room of the INEC office and caused minor damages on some of the furniture and windows. No life was lost,” Police said.
