National Universities Commission, NUC, has directed the closure of all universities in the country during the forthcoming general election.
The measure, according to a statement by the Commission, is to ensure the security of students and facilities in the institutions during the polls.
According to the statement signed by Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration) on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the Commission, academic activities have equally been suspended in all Nigeria universities between February 22 and March 14.
The statement made available to Ikengaonline read in part: “In view of the foregoing and concerns expressed on the security of staff, students and properties of the respective institutions, the Honourable Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has following extensive consultations with the relevant security agencies, directed that all universities and university Centres be shut down and academic activities be suspended between 22” February and 14 March, 2023.
“Consequently Vice Chancellors, as well as Directors Chief Executives of inter-university centres, are by this Circular requested to shut down their respective institutions from Wednesday 22 February 2023 to Tuesday 34 March 2023.
“Please accept the renewed assurances of the Executive Secretary’s highest regards for your understanding and unwavering cooperation.”
