Gunmen suspected to be thugs on Wednesday afternoon invaded a rally organised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Mpu, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, the homestead of the embattled former deputy senate president, Dr Ike Ekweremadu.
A source told Ikengaonline that the gunmen came to the venue wearing masks and shooting sporadically.
According to the source the rally was set to start when the gunmen struck “and everyone ran for safety.”
He, however, confirmed that some people were injured but the number of casualties were not yet known.
“Everything was set at Mpu Primary School, in Aninri for the PDP rally this afternoon but suddenly we started hearing gunshots and the men wearing masks asking everybody to leave,” the source said.
Ikengaonline understands that the incident threw the entire community into comatose, with both the elderly and kids scampering for safety.
A source further stated that canopies, plastic chairs and motorcycles were destroyed and the number of people who may have sustained injuries remained unknown.
