Ben Ezechime, Enugu
There are three Senators representing Enugu State in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The senators include Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu East), Ike Ekweremadu (Enugu West), and Chukwuka Utazi (Enugu North).
While Sen. Ekweremadu had been in the senate since 2003 (20 years), Senators Nnamani and Utazi were elected into the senate in 2015, thereby about to complete their two tenures each.
Nnamani
Sen. Nnamani so far, has sponsored just one bill, which is the Social Assistance Bill of 2019.
However, the senator says he has renovated schools, built boreholes, committed over N50 million in scholarships to indigent students across his constituency.
Utazi
Chukwuka Utazi represents Enugu North district since 2015 and within the period under review, has successfully sponsored 17 bills.
Some of these bills which are at different stages of legislative consideration, include: A bill for an Act to establish Rural Areas Development Agency; and a bill for an Act to amend the University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards, etc.) Act of 1985.
Others are: A bill for an Act to establish the Dietetics Council of Nigeria; bill for an Act to establish the Chartered Polymer Institute of Nigeria and Cattle Movement (Control) Bill; amongst others.
The lawmaker was first elected to parliament in 2015, and was recently appointed the Senate Minority Whip by his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022.
Utazi has also attracted some important projects to some parts of Enugu North district including the Nsukka-Ukpabi, Nimbo-Adani-Onitsha Road.
The Iyi Akoro box culvert done and delivered with the top coated layers of asphalt starting all the way from Ukpabi Nimbo Station.
The latter was facilitated by Senator Utazi’s intervention as a principal officer of the Senate and Member Senate Committee on Works and Housing via Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA.
Ekweremadu
Senator Ekweremadu (Enugu West) is the second longest serving senator in the history of Nigerian legislature after Senator Ahmad Lawan, current President of the 9th Senate.
The senator has ten bills to his credit in the last three years including the Private Detective and Investigators Bill 2019.
Ekweremadu was Deputy President of the Senate in the 6th, 7th and 8th Assemblies, he currently chairs the Senate Committee on Environment, upon the inauguration of the Ninth Senate.
The former deputy senate president has done well for his district by attracting several Federal Projects, including Uduma-Nenwe Federal Road, the Mpu Federal Polytechnic, and Akaeze Achi Federal roads amongst others, within the period under review.
He is, however, currently in detention in the United Kingdom (UK) for alleged Human Organ trafficking case.
Incidentally, among the three senators, only Nnamani is currently campaigning for a return to the Senate owing to the PDP ‘family affair’ arrangement.
Sen. Utazi with all his achievements and brilliance within the eight years of his sojourn in the red chamber, was asked to step down for the incumbent governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
Nnamani on the other hand is currently facing expulsion by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, an action which he has gone to challenge in the court.
