The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it has apprehended scores of suspected political thugs in the Nsukka axis of Enugu State.
The Spokesman of NSCDC Enugu State Command, CSC Danny Iwuchukwu, confirmed this to newsmen in Enugu.
Iwuchukwu said that the scores of suspected thugs arrested had been duly handed over to the Nigeria Police within the Nsukka axis.
He said that the arrest was made early in the morning on the election day March 18, following a tip-off, at a popular hotel in Nsukka.
According to him, AK47 rifles and other dangerous weapons, which included: hand axes; clubs and machetes; were recovered from the political thugs.
Meanwhile, the Police Command in Enugu State has said that there was no adverse security situation in the state so far in the ongoing polls.
The Spokesman of the Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, told newsmen that the police in collaboration with sister security agencies had been pro-active.
He said: “We have acted swiftly on every security tip-off relayed to us.
“The security agencies have remained pro-active and decisive so that the peace-loving people of Enugu State will surely cast their votes in a violence-free and fair manner devoid of intimidation or fear.”
