Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the just concluded general election, Peter Obi, has reechoed that adequate funding of the education and health sectors will drive the desired economic development of Nigeria.
Obi stated this on Thursday during his visit to the Paul University campus in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
Obi said the quality of education and healthcare is crucial to the development of the country, hence leaders must strive to show support for the improvement of the sectors in the land.
The former Anambra State Governor said it had been his routine to visit three healthcare institutions and three secondary schools every month to support them within his capacity as a private citizen.
Handing over the sum of N10 million to the University Management, Obi said: “I brought the check of ten million naira as part of my little support to the university. The check was dated January 13, 2023. I did not come in January because we were campaigning and I did not want to turn it into a political issue.
“Politics is gone now; It is time for us to come and do what we want to do. We support education, and Paul University is one of those institutions that know what they are doing.
“I thought that government should have been supporting them. While I was in government, I remember giving the university about one hundred million nairas as support. But now that I am not there, I will do whatever I can from friends to raise money to support what they are doing.”
Obi reassured that he will continue to partner with the school and lend his support for the betterment of society.
Reacting, Paul University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Obiora Nwosu, commended Obi for the gesture and described him as a man well-known all over the world for his fairness and integrity.
