A bill for a law to ensure the health, safety and welfare of workers working in factories in Anambra State has scaled through second reading at the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Presenting the bill, Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Pascal Agbodike, complained about the condition of some factories, saying that the working environment of factories in the state needs to be improved.
The bill, according to him, will checkmate all the anomalies and sufferings of factory workers.
Agbodike who is the lawmaker representing Ihialla II Constituency said: “Most factories in Anambra State with land of five hundred square meters have more than two hundred workers including machines which most times produce heat.
“Before establishing a factory, there are some safety measures that must be considered such as safety kits, first aid and welfare of workers, which should be taken into proper consideration.”
Other lawmakers who supported the bill include Assembly Minority leader, Hon. Onyebuchi Ofor; Edward Ibuzo; Carter Dike; Uzoma Elle; Charles Obimma; Emeka Afor; Obinna Emeneka; and Nonso Smart Okafor.
The lawmakers in their separate submissions stated that a speedy passage of the bill was necessary and that insurance measures should also be considered.
“Most of the workers in Anambra are on their own and are being taken for granted. This is the bill for the common man. It will ensure the maintenance of factory and a safe work environment.
“We need to improve our work environment. The health of every worker should be protected. This bill if passed will make factories meet up with the international standard for health and safety.
“Our workers need to be protected through life insurance and all we are trying to do as representatives is to ensure that good standard is established.”
