Barr. Ethelbert Obayi, former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly has berated the state assembly for doing nothing and saying nothing about Sen. Ike Ekweremadu over his travails in the United Kingdom.
Obayi, who represented Nsukka West state constituency on the platform of the PDP is now a chieftain of the Labour Party in the State.
He said this in Enugu at a legislative retreat for Labour Party house of assembly members-elect in Enugu State.
The former lawmaker said it was unfortunate that nobody from government raised the case of a high ranking politician in Enugu State such as Ekweremadu.
“It is so bad that since Sen. Ike Ekweremadu was undergoing trials in the United Kingdom (UK), no member of the Enugu State House of Assembly had remembered to move a motion to sympathise with him.
“Nobody from the Enugu State Government raised a memo to British Authorities asking for leniency.
“It has just been business as usual when a former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria from Enugu State is undergoing trials. It is most unfortunate,” Obayi said.
He added that during their time in assembly, such thing would not have happened.
“Not even when highly placed leaders like former President Olusegun Obasanjo wrote to the British Authorities pleading on behalf of Ekweremadu. Our honourable members kept quiet and undisturbed,” he said.
He advised the legislators to always take into consideration societal interests over personal interests, especially on matters concerning their constituents.
