Afro-beat singer, Seun Kuti, was Monday, remanded by a Magistrate Court in Sabo, Yaba District of Lagos State, for alleged assault on a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge over the weekend.

A viral video of the assault has been circulating in the social media with many condemning the attitude of the musician.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adeola Olatubosun, held that Kuti should be remanded for 48 hours in police custody.

However, the court held that Kuti could be granted bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum, at the end of the 48-hour remand.

One of the sureties according to the Magistrate, must be a landlord within the jurisdiction of the court.

The court further directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and send a copy to the State Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.

The musician was accused of grabbing Inspector Mohammed Aminu attached to the Police Training College, Ikeja, while on official movement and in police uniform.

Kuti allegedly slapped Aminu several times on his face.

Police Prosecutor, Mr S. A. Adebeshin,  had applied  to the court to remand  Kuti for  21 days to enable further investigation on the case.

Kuti’s lawyer, Olumide-Fusika said that the defendant was the one who handed himself over to the police and should not be remanded on such grounds.

He, therefore, urged the court to grant him bail, assuring that he will not jump bail but report any time he is needed.
