Although President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly walked back his words on the removal of fuel subsidy by saying the policy does not take immediate effect, petrol stations in some parts of Imo State are now selling the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, between N350 to N400.
This was gathered from different areas in the Owerri metropolis, and around the state on Tuesday.
In the streets visited: Egbu, Akwakuma, Amakohia, Orji, Douglas, Wethedral, Bank Road, Mbari streets, Owerri-Port Harcourt road, Owerri-Onitsha road, Owerri-Aba road and Owerri-Okigwe road, filling stations were selling between N350 to N400 per liter.
When asked, one of the fuel attendants who craved anonymity for fear of being sacked by his employer said, “My oga told us last night to sell a liter at N400. He said that the Federal Government has removed subsidy and that we can sell at any price.”
Another fuel attendant along Owerri-Onitsha Road simply told our Correspondent that, “the management said they Federal Government has stopped supplying us fuel and that there is scarcity of fuel now.”
Ikengaonline reports that the situation has now created panic buying of the product in the State, which effectively started on Monday night.
Residents were seen with their gallons rushing to petrol stations to buy the product and probably store it. Some bought the product to sell at a higher price later when the price would go up.
