Lawrence Nwimo, Awka
In a very rare move, a sitting lawmaker has taken the job of a secondary school teacher in one of the schools in Awka, Anambra State capital.
The lawmaker is Hon. Henry Mbachu, a member representing Awka South 1 constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Ikengaonline gathered that Hon. Mbachu had expressed interest in taking the duties of volunteer Physics teacher at Igwebuike Grammar School Awka, which happens to be his Alma mater.
However, a post shared by Twitter user, @Jack_ng01 disclosed that the Anambra State Government in a letter through the state commissioner for information granted his request, allowing the lawmaker to offer the services in the school free of charge.
The letter which dated July 13, 2023, and signed by Agbaizu Ifeoma on behalf of the Commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, was also copied to the state Post Primary School Service Commission (PPSSC), Awka.
It read thus: “Re-expression of interest to volunteer as a teacher at Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka Nigeria.
“I am directed to refer to your request in the above subject and to convey the Hon Commissioner’s approval as a volunteer at Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka.”
This move has generated a lot of reactions on social media. Some commentators believe that the lawmaker’s decision is a mark of exemplary leadership, others argue that the move is unnecessary and that the lawmaker should look at improving the school facilities and the welfare of the teachers instead of going into classroom to teach.
Below are some of the reactions:
So this LP House of Assembly member in Anambra decided to teach free as Physics teacher at Igwebuike Grammar School Awka
Now this is how to lead; politics should not be a full time job
Thank you Engr Mbachu for leading the way pic.twitter.com/efDcH2NpQp

Appreciating the goodwill, my genuine query is whether he had prior experience as an educator before venturing into politics.
Has he acquired the requisite qualifications to be considered a certified school teacher?

This is not necessary. Look into how to improve the school facilities and the welfare of the teachers.
