The National President of the Association of Igbo Town Unions, ASITU, Emeka Diwe, has called on President Bola Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, because it was an order of a competent court that he should be freed by law and not based on mercy.
Diwe disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen in Owerri, on Friday regarding the call that Kanu should be released based on political mercy.
According to ASITU, “During the past administration, President Muhammadu Buhari pledged to obey the court ruling on Mazi Nnamdi Kalu’s release but reneged when a court of competent jurisdiction ordered his release.
“Therefore, President Ahmed Tinubu will only be showing that he is a democrat if he releases Nnamdi Kalu by the court pronouncement; such release will amount to judicial obedience on the part of the government rather than political mercy.
“There is a list of Nigerians from other tribes who committed various crimes and were detained but released on mere political consideration. So why such hatred and continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kalu, an Igbo man, who has been ordered to be released by the court?”
