Ugo Nosiri, Owerri
Students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede Imo State and commuters along Poly-Ihiagwa Road, have embarked on a peaceful protest to register their displeasure over the hike in fuel prices and consequent high cost in transportation.
The protesters blocked the road carrying placards, thereby causing heavy traffic buildup along Poly-Ihiagwa Road and adjourning roads.
Some of the students who spoke with Ikengaonline, expressed their anger over the high cost of transportation.
According to them, transport fare from Owerri to the school which hitherto was N200, now goes for N300.
One of the road users who simply gave his name as Mr Emeka said the increase in transport fare in Imo State was much more than that of other states.
When Ikengaonline contacted the Public Relations Officer, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Mr. E. Nwosu, he confirmed that the protest was a peaceful one, and that the school Management was finding a way to introduce measures that would cushion the effects of the transport cost on the students.
