The Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Sylvia Agu, has disclosed that about 2300 soldiers and three battalions will be deployed to the state for the November 11th governorship election.
Prof. Agu, disclosed this while delivering a speech at a two-day roundtable organised by the International Press Centre (IPC), for journalists in the state.
She said that the Commander 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze in the state, Brigadier General Usman Lawal gave the assurance of security when the Commission paid him a courtesy visit.
Professor Agu maintained that the military and other security agencies under the platform of the inter agency consultative committee on election security, have assured adequate security of lives and properties of the residents of the state, during and after the elections
The Imo REC also disclosed that the Commission will be interfering with civil society organisations, community leaders, youth groups and all critical stakeholders in the state
Professor Agu harped on the need for the media to work hand in glove with the commission to achieve mass and effective participation of the public, by sensitising the electorate.
“The media’s role in voter education, is not restricted to providing information to potential voters, but also to serve as a platform for exchange of information from the political parties, the electoral commission and the public.”
