Gunmen on Saturday attacked the former Chairman of Udenu Local Area, Enugu State, Dr Godwin Abonyi and his wife along Ugwuogo-Neke Road.
The gunmen, who were reportedly armed to the teeth sprayed bullets on the SUV Jeep while the former chairman and his wife were on their way from Enugu city to Obollo.
The gunmen reportedly emerged from the bush and shot several times at the vehicle but the former chairman was able to miraculously navigate the storm and ran to safety.
Information from a close relative obtained by Ikengaonline reads: “Dr Godwin Abonyi, former Chairman of Udenu LGA, and wife narrowly escaped death at about 5pm yesterday along Ugwogo – Neke Road as they were attacked by gunmen.
“We thank God for His protection upon the family.”
It would be recalled that a few weeks ago a community leader in Neke was killed and dozens abducted along the same road.
The Police are yet to comment on the incident.
