Concerned about the plight of the masses especially the aged in rural communities in the face of the biting economic hardship triggered by the removal of fuel subsidy, a Non-Governmental Organisation, ROSEJENNY Foundation for the Elderly Women, has commenced distribution of free food items among elderly women in Abia Community.
The gesture, according to the Founder of the Foundation, Dr Roseline Obiozor, was to cushion the effects of the prevailing economic stress on families especially the aging women in rural communities who are often marginalised or forgotten.
Dr Obiozor, a Lecturer with the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike MOUAU, decried the pitiable condition of indigent folks which was worsened by the fuel subsidy removal.
She called on public-spirited individuals to come to the rescue of elderly women in society who she regretted, bear the brunt of bad leadership in the country.
Food items including rice, and salt; as well as wrappers; detergents; soaps; were distributed to the elderly women in Amakama Community, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State.
The foundation also gave free medical treatments to the elderly women, while encouraging them not to lose hope.
Medical experts including doctors and nurses were on ground to examine them for various ailments and administer relevant drugs free of charge.
Meanwhile, the elderly women were full of gratitude for the gesture, saying it has rekindled their hope.
One of the receipts, simply known as Madam Elizabeth rained blessings on the Foundation for coming to their rescue.
Another recipient, Mrs Akudo also thanked the Foundation for showing care for elderly women most of who now depend on charity, according to her.
