The Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has assured the people of Imo State that their votes will count during the November 11 governorship election in the state.
He gave the assurance during an Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security meeting with Heads of Security Agencies, Coordinator National Youth Service Corps and Director National Orientation Agency in Imo State.
Professor Yakubu said the visit was to assess the readiness of the state office of the Commission in conducting free, fair and credible elections.
He identified insecurity and desperation among politicians as some of the challenges but noted that he had received the assurances of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for the smooth conduct of the poll.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone Nine Umuahia, Mr. Echeng Echeng, reminded security agencies of the need to maintain professionalism during the election.
He assured the people of level playing ground noting that measures had been taken to ensure that elections were held in areas with security concerns.
