The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault of the person of the president of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
The order has come belatedly about a week after the alleged assault, and on the heels of labour’s threat to embark on nationwide strike action in protest of the brutalization of its leader in Owerri by thugs allegedly loyal to the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma.
The force Public Relations Officer, force headquarters Abuja, ASP Olumuyiwa Adejobi while addressing the press at the force headquarters in Owerri, said the IGP has directed the Deputy Inspector General of Police of the force criminal investigation department to take over the matter and ascertain the true facts surrounding the incident and to address any ambiguities that may exist.
ASP Adejobi noted that the investigation has commenced and assures the public that the police will follow the matter to the end and ensure that appropriate actions are taken based on the findings.
“The IGP assures the leadership of the organised labour that a thorough and unbiased investigation will be conducted to provide clarifications, while urging Organised labour and the public to remain calm as he has personally intervened to address the issues surrounding this incident,” he said.
The force PPRO, therefore reiterated the force’s understanding of transparency and accountability in maintaining public trust.
