Anambra State Government has commenced grassing and planting of trees at the new site of the government house still under construction in Awka, the State capital.
The forestry department of the State Ministry of Environment under the supervision of the Commissioner for Environment, Engr Felix Odimegwu, carried out the exercise recently.
Grasses planted in the area include port-harcourt, fescue, vertiva, and jathropa.
The Commissioner said the exercise is aimed at protecting the land from erosion and other environmental problems, adding that environment remains one of the topmost priorities in Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s development vision.
Engineer Odimegwu said government has started off with a natural bioremediation, which he said has helped to restore the site to a relatively clean, non-toxic environment after which they began the planting of the aforementioned grasses.
He added that the grasses will not only prevent future erosion reoccurrence but will also beautify and curb excess greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
