Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has said that his administration will sign executive order that will prohibit sand mining in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area.
Soludo disclosed his plans during the commissioning of Dr. Alex Ekwueme Civic Center, Awka, the Anambra State capital.
He revealed that his government will form task force comprising representatives from the five villages of the Community, to commence enforcement and seizure of any articulated vehicle found flouting the order.
The Governor said erosion has remained a huge existential threat to Oko, and predicted that if the challenge progresses unhindered, “Oko community will cease to exist in the next five or six decades.”
Recommending the Public, Private, Community Partnership, PPCP development approach as the way forward, the governor pointed out that one of the roles that is expected of the community members, is to start preventing running water from leaving their compounds onto the roads.
