The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, has asked Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led government to evacuate street beggars standing by the Enugu-Onitsha expressway and other highways in the state.
The Union said this would help avert any impending disaster or catastrophe from occurring in the state.
The call was contained in a communique signed by NUJ Anambra State Chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu; and Secretary, Comrade Aloysius Ofodile, after the Union’s April Congress.
NUJ identified the Unizik temporary site junction, Regina Caeli junction, and Arroma junctions of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway as the major flashpoints where the said beggars position to beg for alms, daily.
It read partly, “Congress asks the state government to find a way to evacuate street beggars at the Unizik temporary site, Regina Caeli, and Arroma junctions of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway among others. This will help avert any impending disaster or catastrophe.”
The Union hailed the state Government for resuscitating the water scheme in Anambra, asking the governor to ensure that the scheme is sustained and serves the purpose for which it was revived.
It also commended the Police Force and other security agencies in the state for showing their presence in the fight against insecurity and urged them not to rest on their oars but to do more to eradicate kidnapping and other cult-related crimes in the state.
