The Nigeria Labour Congress, Enugu State Chapter on Monday morning, picketed the office of Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission, NERC, and the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, offices in line with the directives from the National Central Working Committee of NLC.
The state NLC Chairman, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, who led the exercise said Labour was no longer comfortable with the hike in electricity tarrif and picketng of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and disco offices would continue nationwide until further notice.
At the EEDC office, the Organised Labour in Enugu (NLC and TUC ) stormed the gates of the two establishments to register their grievance over what it said was sharp practices by EEDC and its officials as well as NERC and the DISCOs.
Mr Nwigbo condemned the hike in tariff by NERC which had caused untold hardship to workers and some businesses.
He expressed sadness over the unsteady power supply in some areas in the state believing that the exercise would yield positive result not only in Enugu State but the country at large
Also speaking at the EEDC entrance, the TUC Enugu State Chairman, Comrade Ben Asogwa, said that tariff increase was never a solution to Nigeria’s problems.
He stressed that Nigerians were currently faced with challenges of fuel subsidy removal and high cost of living.
Comrade Asogwa advised NERC and EEDC to stop the exploitation and reverse to the status quo.
Some Members of NLC and TUC who chanted solidarity songs in front of the EEDC gate explained that the hike in tarif and epileptic power supply must come to an end as the country was faced with so many challenges.
