Operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Commands have rescued a young victim of underaged employment and domestic abuse in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of the State.
The intervention on Friday was prompted by a viral video depicting the child’s maltreatment.
The victim, a 10-year-old pupil of Peter Maris Primary School in Ifitedunu, was found with grievous injuries inflicted by her employer.
Mrs. Judith Ibadin, the State Coordinator of NAPTIP Anambra State Command, who led the rescue operation, provided details at a press briefing.
She stated that the arrest and rescue were initiated after the agency was alerted by the online video showing the brutalised and maltreated child.
“NAPTIP swept into action, traveled to Abagana, and eventually arrested the woman and rescued the victim,” Mrs. Ibadin recounted.
She said the young girl is now receiving counselling and rehabilitation at the NAPTIP Center and has been placed in a safe shelter provided by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
She also said that the suspect has been arrested and is currently undergoing interrogation, with prosecution expected to follow.
Mrs. Ibadin emphasised the importance of vigilance among the public in identifying and reporting similar crimes. She also issued a stern warning to those who engage in child abuse or any form of violence, highlighting that such acts are punishable under NAPTIP regulations.
“The woman is currently being investigated by NAPTIP, and if found guilty, she will face a jail term to serve as a deterrent to others,” Mrs. Ibadin affirmed.
