Anambra State Government, Monday, commenced the demolition of shanties and illegal structures, said to be defacing Awka, the state capital.
The exercise was carried out by Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) at Ifite Awka axis of the capital city.
The exercise was targeted at the removal of illegal shanties and structures constructed under high tension, power lines and in close proximity to residential buildings to provide a safer environment for its residents.
Addressing the residents, the Head of ACTDA Development Control Unit, Mr. Charles Ekwunife, said the exercise was to enhance the aesthetic and environmental standards of the State Capital and its environs.
He urged the affected individuals to construct standard buildings in safer locations, adding that they should ensure they comply with urban development regulations to contribute to a safer, more organised Awka.
Ekwunife noted that prior to the demolition, ACTDA had repeatedly notified shop owners to desist from erecting buildings in the affected areas, but regretted that despite the warnings, numerous structures remained, prompting the current demolition exercise.
Ekwunife further disclosed that the cleared space is intended for the proposed establishment of a pipe borne water system, which will serve the community’s needs.
He further explained that the exercise will pave way for improved infrastructure and a better quality of life for the residents.
