Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered an immediate investigation into the lifeless body of a baby found in a sack at a refuse dump along Ifite Road, Awka, the state capital.
The body of the newborn baby was reportedly found Sunday evening at Aroma Junction Extension, between the NIPPCO Filling Station and the revamped Anambra State Water Corporation facility, Awka, Anambra State.
The infant’s body, wrapped in old clothes, was discovered with a Sacko bag nearby, which is believed to have been used to carry the corpse.
Confirming the incident in a statement, Anambra Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the body had been recovered and that the CP had ordered full investigation into the incident.
“The child should be a day old and was abandoned by yet unidentified woman suspected to be the mother. Meanwhile, the body has been recovered and the Police are currently working with some eyewitness information at the scene for possible arrest of the perpetrator.
“To this end, the CP decries moral decay in society and describes the act as ungodly, barbaric, and inhuman.”
He also said CP has urged parents and guardians to pay greater attention to children or wards while, calling on anyone with useful information that can aid the investigation to come forward to the Police Command headquarters or contact the Command Control Room number at 07039194332 or the PPRO at 08039334002.
