The Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has sent a delegation to Ghana to rescue vulnerable under-aged girls captured in a viral video from the captivity of traffickers in Ghana.
The young girls were seen in a viral video making rounds on social media where they were being interviewed by some social activists.
The team led by the Deputy Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Amara Iwuanyanwu, and the Commissioner for women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Mrs Nkechi Ugwu, was given an order not to return to Nigeria without the girls.
According to the Commissioner for Women affairs and Social welfare, the rescue team is also mandated to rehabilitate the girls and ensure their trafficker is made to face the wrath of the law.
However, a source in the know told Ikengaonline that the action of the governor and his officials may just be another jamboree, or at best, playing to the gallery.
The source authoritatively said Governor Uzodimma and his officials cannot do much without the active cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Diaspora Commission, and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, since the offense was committed in an outside jurisdiction.
The source also confirmed that already the Foreign Affairs ministry, Diaspora Commission and NAPTIP have been liaising with their Ghanian counterparts over the rescue, return and rehabilitation of the girls, including getting to the root of the matter with a view to arresting all those within Nigeria that played a part in the ugly saga.
