The Member representing Anaocha Constituency Two at the State House of Assembly, Sir Ejike Okechukwu, has called for urgent safety measures from residents following a devastating flood that ravaged Neni community in the state.
The flood devastation was caused by recent heavy downpours at Neni community in Anaocha Council Area.
The lawmaker who conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the affected area said the move followed a viral video circulating online that highlighted the severity of the situation.
Speaking after the spot check, Sir Ejike who hails from the community, expressed concern over the extent of damage, noting that although no life was lost, the floodwaters caused massive destruction to residents’ property and stated that the viral video, which showed the scale of the devastation, prompted the immediate response from the State Assembly members to address the flood’s impact.
Ejike pointed out that the primary objective of the visit, was to identify the root causes of the flooding and proffer long-lasting solutions to prevent future occurrences, and commended the present administration under Governor Chukwuma Soludo for its responsive governance and assured the residents that the government would take swift action to mitigate the impact of the floods.
The Lawmaker urged the residents to adopt safety measures as the government is working to provide a lasting solution.
On his part, the Chairman of the Committee, Engineer Emma Nwafor, observed that the velocity of the water current is so high that the existing drainage systems are overwhelmed and need to be expanded and urged residents in the affected areas to be patient, assuring them that the government is taking action to address the situation.
Some flood victims who shared their experiences including Mr. Uche Afamefuna and Mrs Ngozi Emeh, said that the flood destroyed their food items, business and property, and appealed to the state government for urgent intervention to help them recover from their losses and rebuild their lives.
