Member representing Ikwuano-Umuahia North-Umuahia South federal constituency, at the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has hailed members of the 180 Reps minority caucus for unanimously endorsing the motion for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Aguocha who moved the motion during the meeting of the caucus in Abuja on Monday, commended the members of the caucus for disregarding religious, tribal and political differences to endorse the motion.
The lawmaker in a statement Tuesday, said: ” I wish to appreciate my colleagues and leadership of the 180 member minority caucus of the 10th House of Representatives for yielding the floor at our meeting yesterday, to hear me, and for their courageous stand in the defense of justice, for our resolution at pleading with Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, to release my constituent, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, amongst others.
“Our strength and sincerity of purpose would help cement our unity in diversity and foster a greater Nigeria, which has remained our utmost desire.”
Rep. Aguocha who has passionately championed the movement for Kanu’s release, had while moving the motion, urged his colleagues to take a definitive position on the ongoing discourse surrounding the detention of Kanu and to explore a political solution to his release.
The Labour Party lawmaker, stressed that the resolution of Kanu’s case was crucial for national peace, stability, and cohesion.
Aguocha called for immediate and strategic engagement with relevant stakeholders to advocate for a peaceful and political resolution to the matter, which has significant implications for the socio-political landscape of Nigeria.
The lawmaker argued that the matter should be better settled politically instead of a prolonged abuse of legal processes and confrontation.
According to him, political solution can pave the way for enhanced national integration and the restoration of trust among various communities in Nigeria.
He said: “Today, the opposition parties have taken a decisive stand on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the planned protest, insecurity, the dilapidated infrastructure, and the economy.
“The adoption of the position on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the influential caucus comes off the heels of my recent visits to the former President Muhammadu Buhari, successful mobilisation of 50 of our fellow colleagues across all parties and also the South-East caucus of the National Assembly. It will be recalled that the South-East Governors’ forum also joined in the call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.
“This call to action by my colleagues serves as a reminder of the critical role that legislative bodies play in fostering peace and stability in the nation. I remain committed to championing initiatives that promote justice, equity, and harmonious coexistence across Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, the caucus comprises 115 members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), 35 seats, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), 19 seats, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), 5 seats, Social Democratic Party (SDP), 2 seats, Young Progressives Party (YPP), 2 seats, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), 2 seats.
