Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has shared the tragic passing of legendary Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu.
The artiste collapsed and died on Tuesday shortly after performing at a birthday party, leaving the nation in deep mourning.
Peter Obi on X platform, popularly known as Twitter, said on Wednesday: “Yesterday provided a very devastating moment for me as I witnessed a tragic event that will forever be etched in my memory.
“I was present at the event where the iconic song star, Onyeka Onwenu, performed a couple of her songs, ending with her famous song, ‘One Love Keep Us Together.’ It was a beautiful performance, but little did we know it would be her final bow.”
Obi described the scene following Onwenu’s performance, saying, “After singing, she sat down to rest and took a sip of water. Moments later, she suddenly collapsed, prompting immediate efforts to rush her to the hospital. I followed her to the hospital.
“I watched in pain as the doctors and medical staff fought tirelessly and battled to save her life, doing everything possible to bring her back to life, but eventually came out with the sad news that she was gone.”
Obi disclosed that despite the valiant efforts of the medical team, Onwenu passed away after over two hours of intense struggle.
The news of her death has shocked and saddened many, as she was not only a beloved singer but also a symbol of hope and unity for the nation.
“My heart goes out to her children and family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May we find the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss,” Obi said.
He described Onwenu as a national treasure, highlighting her remarkable contributions to music, activism, and the arts.
“Onwenu was a national treasure, a shining star who inspired generations with her music, activism, and strong dedication to the arts. Her passing is a tremendous loss for the entire nation, and she will be deeply missed.”
Obi also expressed his gratitude to those who supported Onwenu during her final moments.
