Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has inaugurated the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) ahead of the conduct of local government elections in the state.
Soludo performed the function at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, with Magistrate Chinelo Genevieve Osakwe emerging as the Chairman of the Commission.
Other members are Mrs. Bernadine Obande, Barr. Osita Cyril Igbokwe, Sir Chinedu Anthony Nnalue, Mrs. Helen Ifeyinwa Umeh and Mr. John Emeka Okeke.
Terms of reference of the Commission include to organise, undertake and supervise all elections and matters pertaining to elections to the elective offices in the Local Government councils in the State, among others.
The functions of the Commission under paragraph (a) (1) of Anambra Electoral Law 2024 shall include the division of the area of the Local Government, into such number of wards or constituencies as are prescribed by law for the purpose of the elections to be conducted by the Commission, among others.
Recall that Anambra is one of the states barred in May by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja from receiving LG allocations from the consolidated revenue funds.
The court restrained the Accountant General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Finance from further remitting funds due to the 21 Local Government Areas of Anambra State to the Soludo-led State Government pending the conduct of LG election.
However, Soludo who had earlier initiated the processes for the election had obtained confirmation of the six-man nominees of the State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) from the State House of Assembly.
Inaugurating the members of the Commission, the governor charged them to render nothing short of sterling service to the people.
