The Traditional Ruler of Amaeze Owerre Community in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Emeka Ugwu, and members of his community have expressed shock and sadness over four family members in his community who died in their sleep on the night of Saturday August 31.
Ugwu said this in Nsukka on Monday while speaking with newsmen on the tragedy that hit his community on Saturday night, wherein mother, two daughters and grand daughter died in their sleep.
“Everybody in Amaeze community is still in shock over this tragic incident that took the lives of four family members.
“We have not witnessed anything like this in the history of our community. We are making efforts to determine what could have led to this tragedy.
“The community may seek spiritual guidance to uncover the cause of this mysterious tragic incident,” he said.
He disclosed that a grandson of about 18 years who survived in the incident has been responding to treatment in one of the hospitals in Nsukka town.
Ugwu explained that, the matter was reported to Nsukka Police Division who sent officers from the division immediately who rushed the only survivor to hospital as well as deposited four lifeless bodies in the mortuary for autopsy and further investigations.
A senior police officer in Nsukka Police Division who pleaded anonymity, who confirmed the incident said the four lifeless bodies have been deposited in a hospital in Nsukka town as investigations have started to unravel circumstances surrounding the incident.
He disclosed that the only survivor in the incident is still receiving treatment in a hospital in Nsukka town.
He said though the cause of the death of the four has not been ascertained, but noted that external attack might be ruled out as the door of the house was bolted from inside.
“Since the door of the house was locked or bolted from inside, external attack may be ruled out,” he said.
