Enugu State Government says it has begun investigations into the activities of Oriokpa masquerades in Nsukka Local Government Area, following reports of violent incidents that led to deaths and widespread disorder in the area.
In the the light if this, Traditional Rulers and Presidents-General of the affected communities have been summoned to a meeting with government representatives to address the situation.
This was contained in a statement released by the Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Deacon Okey Ogbodo.
In the statement the government expressed concern over the conducts of the masquerade groups, which have caused chaos and inflicted injuries on people of the area.
Acting on the directive of Governor Peter Mbah, the traditional leaders of communities including Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo have been invited to meet with the Commissioner at the State Secretariat on Friday, September 27, 2024, by 1 p.m.
The state government also urged the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents, and to hold those responsible accountable and bring them to book.
The government equally issued a stern warning, stating that further misconduct by any group would not be tolerated.
“The government will not allow any group or individual to instill fear in the people. The safety and rights of all residents, including women, children, and youth, must be upheld,” the statement said.
The violence, which occurred earlier this week, followed a history of misconduct by the Oriokpa masquerades, who were also involved in a widely condemned attack on a female nurse in April.
