The Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has introduced Mortuary Tax in the state with immediate effect.
This was contained in a directive written to Mortuary Attendants in the state signed by the Chairman of IRS, Mr Emmanuel Nnamani.
In the letter entitled, “Notice of implementation of mortuary tax,” the government says that “the sum of N40 only is to be paid by owners of a corpse once it was not buried within twenty-four hours.
According to the statement, the amount continues to count.
The letter reads: “The Enugu State IRS in line with the provisions of section 34 of the Deaths, Births and Burial Laws of Cap 15, Revised Laws of Enugu State 2004, hereby approves the implementation of mortuary tax.
“Kindly ensure that owners of corpses make payments before collection of the corpses for burial and then remit same to the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (IRS) account.”
Ikengaonline reports that the present administration of Governor Peter Mbah has since assumption of office on May 29, 2023, introduced some strange tax regimes that many believe to have constrained a lot of businesses in the state.
