Abia State Government in partnership with the Federal Government is to build a standard airport in the state.
The project according to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, is to be sited at Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, about 10 kilometers from Umuahia the state capital.
Kanu who disclosed this during a press briefing Monday in Umuahia, said the Minister for Aviation, Mr Festus Keyamo, would flag off the construction on Tuesday, December 27.
He noted that the airport was not the State Government’s priority project initially but the State decided to go into it after the Federal Government had indicated readiness to build an air strip in the state.
According to him, the Governor, Dr Alex Otti, felt it was better to build a full scale airport instead of an air strip, hence, his decision to upgrade the air strip into an airport by building the runways.
Ikengaonline reports that Abia is the only state in the South-East geo-political zone without an airport.
Passengers who travel by air in the state patronise air ports in the neighbouring states.
The Commissioner who said Otti was in a hurry to transform the state, added the three new roads had been reconstructed in Aba, waiting for inauguration.
He identified them as Cemetery Road Phase 2, Umule Road and Umuocham Road, all in Aba.
He said the latest set of roads had brought the total number of roads so far reconstructed by Gov. Otti through direct labour to 147.
The Commissioner who said work was progressing as scheduled in other road projects sites across the state said Abia would witness more infrastructural development in the months ahead.
He, however, pleaded with residents to refrain from burning tyres or any activity that could destroy the roads.
