The Obidient Movement has raised concerns that Nigeria is gradually sliding into an authoritarian state under the leadership of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu.
Ikengaonline reports that the concerns followed recent remarks by Mr Felix Morka, the APC National Publicity Secretary, on Arise TV, against Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
The APC spokesperson had said that Obi has “crossed the line so many times and he has what’s coming to him, and whatever he gets, he should manage it.”
Reacting in a statement signed by Dr Yunusa Tanko, the group described Morka’s remarks as reckless and a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy. It also viewed the comments as a direct threat to Obi’s life and the peace of the country.
It said the statement was not only an attack on the vocal 2023 LP presidential candidate but also a “dangerous signal of the country’s descent into authoritarianism under Tinubu’s administration.”
“His statement that “Mr. Peter Obi has crossed the line so many times and he has what’s coming to him, and whatever he gets, he should manage it,” is considered a direct threat to Mr. Obi’s life, and the peace of the Nigerian state.
“We view this as not only an attack on Mr. Peter Obi but also a dangerous signal of Nigeria’s descent into authoritarianism under the current administration. Such a declaration from the spokesperson of the ruling party is reckless, unbecoming, and a blatant endorsement of violence.”
The group issued a stern warning to the ruling APC and its agents, declaring that they would be held directly responsible should any harm come to Mr Obi, his family, or his supporters.
They said Obi’s dedication to Nigeria’s progress has been unwavering and demonstrated through his focus on issue-based politics, tireless efforts to address national challenges, and commitment to democratic principles.
According to them, “His New Year address, which critically evaluated the state of the nation and offered practical solutions, was devoid of personal attacks, hate, or incitement. It was a message of hope and a call for decisive action to rescue Nigeria.”
Obidients demanded an immediate retraction and apology from Mr. Felix Morka and the APC leadership. They also demanded an investigation by security agencies into the intent and implications of Mr. Morka’s remarks.
They demanded increased protection of democratic values and promotion of constructive engagement over divisive rhetoric, stressing that Nigerians must resist the slide into dictatorship by demanding accountability and justice.
