Popular Nigerian political satirist Adeola Fayehun has said that the advocates for the Yoruba Nation and the Biafra Republic should demonstrate what they will do differently if they get a separate nation. She made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica.
“Those who are advocating for secession, what are they doing now, or what is preventing them from doing anything in their places to make life better for their people,” she queried.
“They should tell us how this problem can be solved by having a separate nation.”
The humorist explained that those who think breaking up Nigeria will make things better are wishful thinkers. She said if they can’t hold their leaders accountable today, how do they expect to do so in a Biafra Republic or a Yoruba Nation?
“All the governors are getting hundreds of millions every month as security votes. What are they doing with the money? Or is it that they stopped being Igbo or Yoruba because they are governors, and suddenly, when Biafra or Yoruba Nation comes, they will start doing well for the people.? If they don’t care about the people right now, they won’t care even if they separate from Nigeria,” she insisted.
She noted that those who will be in leadership in the proposed seceded nations are currently in Nigeria, either as leaders or followers. So, if they have not done anything visible to improve Nigeria, it will likely be the same in any of the new nations.
Adeola, the host of the political satire show, “Keeping It Real With Adeola,” further argued that the only way the agitation for secession can make sense is if the Nigerian Federal Government is preventing any sub-national government from developing their states or regions. She said if that had been the case, the Federal Government would have hindered their development, and they could legitimately advocate for secession.
