Wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, and former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, have called for gender equality and empowerment of women in Nigeria.
The duo made the call in separate statements they issued to mark this year’s International Women’s Day.
They also called for concerted efforts to eradicate Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the country.
Anyim in his statement noted the strength, resilience, and brilliance of every woman and girl in Nigeria and across the world.
He described women as the heartbeat of every home and the backbone of our economy
“On this International Women’s Day, we do more than recognise your contributions—we commit to removing every barrier that holds you back. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” is a call for bold and immediate change.
“It is not enough to acknowledge gender inequality; we must dismantle it. It is not enough to admire women’s achievements; we must create more opportunities. It is not enough to condemn gender-based violence; we must eradicate it.
“For too long, women have carried the weight of society while being denied their rightful place in leadership, business, and decision-making. That must end.
“I stand with you, not just in words, but in action. I pledge to support and champion policies that protect women from violence, empower women entrepreneurs, expand access to education for girls, and make workplaces truly inclusive,” he said.
“But this is more than policies—it is about changing mindsets and challenging the status quo. Every father must raise his daughter to believe she is limitless.
“Every brother must stand as a defender of his sister’s rights. Every husband must uplift his wife as an equal partner. When we lift women, we lift families. When we empower women, we empower nations.”
Mrs Nwifuru is a statement by Her Spokesperson, Nnenna Oshibe, described women as the pillars of homes, communities, and society, adding that their contributions continue to shape the future of the State and country.
“This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” serves as a powerful call for all of us to redouble our efforts in advancing gender equality, empowering women economically, and ensuring that their voices are heard in all spheres of life.
“The time for change is now, to uplift, support, and create more opportunities for women and girls,” she said.
The wife of the Governor statetd that Ebonyi women through her Foundation, BERWO, are given a conducive environment to strive and be more productive to enable them to support their families.
“Over the years, Ebonyi State has recorded remarkable achievements in promoting the rights of women and girls, thanks to the unwavering leadership of Bldr. Francis Nwifuru, and the dedication to women-focused policies and programmes.”
She charged the woman to continue breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and inspiring future generations.
She reaffirmed her commitment to policies and initiatives that promote women’s empowerment, education, and economic inclusion in Ebonyi State.
She, however, noted that there is still much more to be done to ensure that every woman and girl thrives without limitations.
She called on all women to rise to the challenge, seize opportunities, and actively shape their futures.
“Every woman must be an agent of change at home, in the workplace, and in the community. The time for waiting is over,” she stated.
Mrs Nwifuru called on governments, organisations, and individuals to accelerate action in building a more inclusive and equitable society where every woman can achieve her full potential.
“Your voice matters, your dreams are valid, and your contributions are invaluable to the progress of our society. May you continue to shine and thrive in all that you do,” she stated.
